A PERSONAL PROFILE OF RUIKO YOSHIDA
RUIKO YOSHIDA WAS BORN IN HOKKAIDO, JAPAN IN 1934.
SHE GRADUATED FROM THE FACULTY OF LAW, KEIO UNIV.
AFTER WORKING AS AN ANNOUNCER AT INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT NHK (NIHON HOUSOU KYOKAI : JAPAN BROADCASTING CORPORATIOIN), AND ASAHI HOSO (ASAHI BROADCASTING STATION), SHE LEFT FOR THE U.S.A. AND STUDIED AT GRADUATE SCHOOL OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN NEW YORK, SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM
ON FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP.
SHE WORKED AT MUSEUM OF MODERN ART,
J.W. THOMPSON ADVERTISING COMPANY IN N.Y
AND CAME BACK TO JAPAN IN 1971.
SINCE THEN SHE HAS BEEN TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS AS CONTRIBUTING PHOTO- JOURNALIST IN VIETNAM, INDIA,
CHINA, NICARAGUA, IRAN, EGYPT, LYBIA,
AND AFRICAN COUNTRIES.
FOR PAST TEN YEARS, SHE HAS BEEN IN SOUTH AFRICA,
BEFORE AND AFTER APARTHEID.
SHE HAS BEEN TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS WITH A VIEW
OF LOVE IN PEOPLE'S DAILY LIVES AND EMOTIOINS,
ESPECIALLY WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
SHE HAS WRITTEN A NUMBER OF BOOKS SUCH AS
"HOTTEST DAYS IN HARLEM-BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL" ,
WHICH WAS NOMINATED AS THE CANDIDATE FOR
THE BEST OHYA NON-FICTIOIN BOOK IN 1973.
SHE HAS DIRECTED A TOHO FILM CALLED "LONGRUN" IN 1981.
SHE WON A SPECIAL PRIZE OF J.C.J.
(JAPAN CONGRESS OF JOURNALISTS) IN 1989.
SHE WON A SPECIAL PRIZE OF THE 19TH HIGASHIKAWA PRIZE FOR HER PHOTO-SERIES OF "BEAUTIFUL AGE"
(HOKKAIDO TOWN HIGASHIKAWA INTERNATIONAL
PHOTO FESTIVAL) IN 2003.
